Mathilda “Tillie” L. Swanson, age 94, of Iron River, MI, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI. She was born May 3, 1922 in Crystal Falls, MI, the daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Kubinski) Skibo. She attended the Alpha Schools, graduating with the Class of 1940. Tillie was employed as a baker by the Iron County Medical Care Facility, retiring in 1971. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, St. Agnes Altar Society, the Rosary Sodality, former member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Senior Citizen Center of Stambaugh, and enjoyed being in the Friendship Club of the Iron River Nursing Home. Tillie was a great cook and excellent baker and loved sharing her baked goods with family and friends. She was very witty and loved making people laugh. She loved being with her grandchildren, playing cards, reading, and volunteering to help the residents at the Iron County Medical Care Facility. She loved nature and enjoyed the spring wildflowers every year. Tillie is survived by her children, Cheryl (Dennis) Spaulding of Hudson, FL, Barbara (Jeff) DeRidder of Iron Mountain, MI, James (Joan) Swanson of Milwaukee, WI, and Cindy (Don) Gasperini of Iron River; sister, Dolores (Frank) Hoholek of Crystal Falls; grandchildren, Robert Rajala, Edward Rajala, Andrew Rajala, Rhonda LeSage, Steven Applin, Jill Lyon, Julie Swanson, Michael Swanson, Jaclyn Swanson, Daniel Gasperini, and Jessica Brosius; 17 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Casmer, Stanley, Matthew, Phillip, and Walter Skibo, and sister, Wanda Stockero. Visitation will be held Friday, March 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 18th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, March 18th at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in the spring.
