Melvin B. Nelson

Melvin B. Nelson, 85, of Gary, IN, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, in Michigan City, IN. He was born on August 29, 1939, in East Chicago, IN, the son of the late Serge and Mildred Elvera (Larson) Nelson. Melvin attended Gary, IN schools, graduating from Tolleston High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed in payroll for U.S. Steel before retirement. Melvin enjoyed golfing, bowling, and watching and attending NASCAR races. He also went to Indy 500 many times. He was always willing to help anyone, especially his neighbors and family. Melvin is survived by his brother, Floyd (Jacqueline) Nelson of Porter, IN; grandson, Aaron Nelson; nephews, Darren and Jason Nelson; special friends, Wendel and Karen Szczerba of Chesterton, IN; extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his son, James Nelson. A special thank you to the fifth-floor staff at Franciscan Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River with Pastor Mike Poindexter to officiate.
