Merton E. Belongie

Merton E. Belongie Age 87 Iron River, MI Passed away October 1, 2012 at his home. He was born June 21, 1925 in Iron River, MI, the son of the late Harvey and Inez (Plier) Belongie. He attended the Iron River Schools, graduating with the Class of 1943. Merton served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was honorably discharged with a purple heart and five bronze stars. He married Margaret Nelson on November 22, 1950 at the First Lutheran Church and the couple made their home in Iron River. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2011. Merton was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, the DAV and the Elks. His favorite pastime was archery. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Belongie of Iron River, MI Son, Craig Belongie of Marquette, MI Daughter, Patricia Ann (Michael)Hautala of Ramsay, MI Barbara Jo (Kurt) Niemi of Marquette, MI Kathleen Merrow of Portalnd, OR Kim (Gerald) Johnson of Waukesha, WI Ten Grandchildren Five great grandchildren He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Belongie. Private family services will be held. Merton 's favorite poem for his wife was ""I wantcha when I 'm happy, I wantcha when I 'm blue, Even when I 'm mad atcha I wantcha""yes I do!
