Paul W. Malmquist, age 66 of Iron River, MI, died Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at the Northstar Health System, Iron River. Born: February 11, 1943 in Iron River, MI The son of Burt and Vera (Sleeman) Malmquist, Paul attended grade school in Iron River and graduated from Roane County High School in Kingston, Tennessee in 1961, after moving to Tennessee in 1958. He then attended Michigan State University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1965. After teaching in Warren, MI, he returned to the Iron River area in 1969 and taught at West Iron County Schools, serving the district as elementary and middle school principal until his retirement in1998. Paul married the former Andrea Moon on June 10,1993 in North Dakota. The couple made their home in Iron River Township. They enjoyed many years working Rodeos across the Mid-West together and spending time on their farm. He was above all else a tireless educator (whatever the arena) and taught everyone around him many lessons until his passing. His lifelong passion for educating was seconded only by his love of friends, family, practical jokes, and this community. He was a member of the Teachers' Union, The Iron County Fair Board, and served as an Iron River Township Trustee and Iron County Commissioner for many years. He was an active member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He participated in and enjoyed his time with The Engineers' Club, The Iron County Timbermen's Association, Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County, Northern Snowshoe Toms, Camp Gibbs, Iron County Republicans, The Farm Bureau, and the Elks Lodge 1671 of Iron River. Paul was also active in 4-H and was a well-known auctioneer. He is survived by his wife Andrea Two sons; Eric (Michelle) Malmquist of Iron River Aran Malmquist of Iron River Their mother, Marilyn Malmquist of Iron River Two grandchildren; Rachel and Anna Two brothers; Curt (Darlene) Malmquist of Florida Pete (Linda) Malmquist of Tennessee One sister, Helen (Don) Kettenbeil of Tennessee Several nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by an infant sister, his father Burt in 1958, and his mother Vera in 1990. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Friends of Camp Gibbs in care of Jim Duda. Memorial services will be held in the spring. Date to be announced.
