Peter Povich

Peter Povich, age 89 of Iron River, MI, died Sunday September 26, 2010 at his home. Born: September 15, 1921 in Iron River, Michigan. The son of the late John and Cecelia (Bonavich) Povich was a life long resident. He attended the Iron River schools and while in high school was Quarterback for the Iron River Steelers. He was a U.S. Naval Service-Coast Guard Veteran serving during WWII. Peter was a heavy equipment operator employed by McMahon Construction and later for many years by Bocco Construction retiring in 1986. He married Betty Erickson and she preceded him in death August 27, 1960. He later married Mescal Spencer Vantaggi December 29, 1962 and she preceded him in death January 14, 1999. On May 12, 2000 he married the former Jean Puckett Sunn and the couple made their home in Iron River. Peter was a fun loving, unique man who never knew a stranger. He loved the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, camping and digging holes and running machinery. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Iron River, American Legion Alfred Branchini Post #17, Iron River and the Iron River Elks Lodge #1671. Peter was also preceded in death by brothers Emil and George Povich and sisters Mary Stebbins and Ann McMahon. He is survived by his wife, Jean Daughters; Vicki (Ricky) Demboski of Iron River Kay (Tim) Zurn of West Bend, WI Son, Peter Michael Povich of Aurora, WI Sisters; Frances (Arrigo) Ugolini of Lake Geneva, WI Katherine (John) Sporer of Iron River Stepchildren, Kathy (Steve) Sanger of Appleton, WI Garilyn (Randy) Kramer of Sun Prarie, WI Sandra (Darin) Long, Iron River Dr. Terry Vantaggi of Phoenix, AZ 4 Grandchildren, 4 Great Grandchildren Goddaughter, Patty Waite and Ken Wensel,( who Peter mentored since he was a young boy) nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Visitation: Tuesday September 28, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. Funeral Service: Wednesday September 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, Iron River with the Rev. John Fish, pastor, to officiate. Interment: Lakeview Cemetery, Alvin, WI at 2:00 p.m. with the West Side Veterans to accord Military Rites. Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.
