Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Phyllis Ann Smith, age 93, of Tipler, WI, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016 at the Lutheran Home, Wauwatosa, WI. She was born October 13, 1922 in Gillette, WI, the daughter of the late James and Lilya (Dickson) Durand. She attended the Gillette, Tipler, Florence, and Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School with the Class of 1940. On August 30, 1941, Phyllis married Merle Smith at Maple Grove Covenant Church in Tipler, WI, and the couple celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 1999. Merle preceded her in death on February 1, 2000. She was employed as a cook for the Iron County General Hospital for many years, retiring in 1990. Phyllis was a Sunday School Teacher at Maple Grove for many years, played the piano, served as Choir Director, and was a member of the Maple Grove Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Grace Covenant Church of Iron River, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and was a member of the Covenant Women where she served as Chairperson. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Judith (Mark) Chybowski of Brookfield, WI, and Barbara Smith of Caspian, MI; sisters, Marvel Smith of Babbitt, MN, Joann Junek of Menominee Falls, WI, Ruby Doria of Sun City, AZ, and Jeanette Durand of Dallas, TX; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy Bandy in 1985; Brother, James Durand; and Sisters, Opal Post and Lorraine Jolicoeur Visitation will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Grace Covenant Church of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. James Swanson II of Grace Covenant, and Rev. Mike DeLong of Milwaukee Evangelical Covenant Church to officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
