Ray M. Smith, 76, of Gaastra, MI, passed away Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Northstar Health System, Iron River, MI. He was born September 3, 1937 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Stanley and Blanche (Powell) Smith. He was a high school graduate, and later attended Wayne State University. Prior to moving to the Iron County area in 1980, Ray was employed at Chrysler Corporation for 22 years. He later worked as a chef for 30 years, and was the owner of the Dinner Bell Cafe for many years. Ray married the former Doreen Faye Bjork on July 13, 1957 at the First Lutheran Church of Iron River. Doreen preceded him in death on April 18, 2004. He was a member of the Iron River Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Ray enjoyed cooking, gardening, stamp collecting, and especially his family and dog Zoeie. A very social man, he was well known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He is survived by his son, Shawn (Susan) Smith of New London, WI; daughters, Loana (John) Greenacre of Gaastra, Rebecca (Douglas) Kuettel of Hortonville, WI, and Beth (Dave) Gardynik of Dale, WI; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his twin brother, Roy, brother, Arthur Cook, infant brother, Stanley Joseph, and sister, Violet Scarlotti. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with time and date to be announced.
