Raymond L. LaFountain, age 85 of Iron River, MI, died Monday, November 17, 2008 at Marquette General Hospital, Marquette, MI. Born: May 30, 1923 in Iron River. The son of the late Thomas and Artymease (Marcell) LaFountain attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School in 1942. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. Ray married the former Mary Bicus on February 16, 1946 at the Assumption Church, Iron River, and the couple made their home in Bates Township. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1996. He was employed as a miner by Inland Steel, working at the Bristol and Sherwood mines and served as vice-president and later president of the Steelworkers Union Local. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, the former Assumption Church, and VFW Post #3134. He was an avid softball and sports fan. He was preceded in death by seven brothers; Albert, Earl, Eli, Edward, Pat, Leo, and Carl; and three sisters; Florence Kilborn, Celeste Puller, and Irene May. He is survived by his wife Mary Two sons, Dennis LaFountain of Hollywood, FL Gary (Virginia) LaFountain of Iron River Two daughters, Janice (Phillip) Stanton of Oscoda, MI Kathleen (Jesse) Carlson of Negaunee, MI Eleven grandchildren Seven great grandchildren Numerous nieces and nephews Visitation: Thursday, November 20, 2008 from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River. Funeral Service: Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Iron River with the Rev. Norman Clisch, pastor, to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. The West Side Veterans Council will accord military rites. Interment: Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River. Funeral arrangements by the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River.
