Robert “Frenchie” V. Burke, age 81, of Iron River, MI, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 26, 1932 in Gaastra, MI, the son of the late Edward and Aldia (Liberty) Burke. He attended the Palatka School of Gaastra, and Caspian School. Robert married the former Mary Ellen Jewell on December 8, 1951 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Mackinaw City, MI, and the couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in 2013. Robert was a self-employed truck driver for many years. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church and the Elks Club. He was a “Jack of all trades” and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and whittling canes. He loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; sons, Robert “Buddy” (Lynn) Burke of Iron River, and Mike (Lisa) Burke of Minocqua, WI; daughters, Patsy (George) Peterson of Crystal Falls , and Kelly (Lester) Uren of Iron River; brothers, Alfred Burke of McMinnville, TN, Edward Burke of Madison, WI, and Thomas (Ingrid) Burke of Shawano, WI; brothers-in-law, Bob Symmonds of Iron River and David (Celeste) Jewell of Mackinaw City, MI; sisters-in-law, Helen Burke of Crystal Falls, Arline Jewell of Comstock Park, MI, and Marion Jewell of Mason, MI; 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William and James Burke; sister, Marylee Symmonds and infant sister, Beverly; son-in-law, Gary Tass; brothers-in-law, Robert and Fred Jewell; special angels, Brienne Donati and Cameron Lewis. Visitation will be held Friday, January 24, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, with Rev. George Maki to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.
