Roland E. Kinney

July 26, 1930 — December 14, 2018

Roland E. Kinney, age 88, of Caspian, MI, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Byron Center, MI with his family by his side.    He was born on July 26, 1930 in Green Bay, WI; the son of the late Emanuel and Josephine (Tessadri) Kinney. He attended the Caspian Schools then Stambaugh High School, graduating Class of 1948.  Roland served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1952.  Roland married Jane “Jean” Kinney on May 10, 1958 at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River, MI. The couple made their home in Caspian and celebrated their 53rd anniversary 2011.  Jean preceded him in death on December 10, 2011.    Throughout the years, he became a Journeyman Millwright, a certified Welder, Diesel Mechanic, and Auto body Technician.  Roland was employed at Forslund Lumber, the Groveland Mine and DA MacPherson, retiring after 30 years there.  He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian, the Caspian Fire Department, which became the Tri-City Fire Department, the Duke of Abruzzi, the Iron River Elks Lodge #1671, and the VFW Ottawa Post #3134. Roland enjoyed many hobbies and leisure activities in his life including being outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing, and camping with his family.  He spent countless hours working on projects in his garage, home, and sharing his love for old classic cars.  Throughout the years Roland embraced the community he lived and loved through many of the organizations he supported.  In the past several years he enjoyed relaxing in his recliner and watching classic TV shows like Lawrence Welk and The Andy Griffith Show. Roland is survived by his daughter, Susan (Patrick) Kinney-Huffman of Sparta, MI; sons, Thomas (Jody) Kinney of Grandville, MI and Daniel (Dawn) Kinney of Spring Lake, MI; grandchildren, Christopher, Crystal, and Nicole; brother, Jerry Kinney of Caspian, MI; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Darlene LaVacque. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 27, 2018 from 9:00 to 10:30am at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.  Members of the Iron County Firemen's Association will pass in review at 9:30am.  Funeral services will follow at 11am at St. Cecilia Catholic Church with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.  The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites after the service.
