Ronald A. Holmes, age 82, of Iron River, MI, passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Iron County Medical Care Center, Crystal Falls, MI. He was born November 19, 1932 in Stambaugh, MI, the son of the late Eynard and Ina (Salmi) Holmes. He attended the Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School with the Class of 1950. He later attended the University of Richmond, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. Ronald married the former Beverly Fregetto on May 20, 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church of Iron River. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2014. Ronald owned and operated the Rainbow Dry Cleaners from 1970 to 1980. In 1981, the couple moved to Nevada where Ron worked in mining and trucking, returning to Iron River in 1996. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Reino Post #21 of Stambaugh. He played college football and was an avid University of Michigan and Detroit sports fan. He played hockey, football, fast pitch softball, and played for the Iron County Steelers. An avid fisherman, he especially enjoyed fishing at the Tamarack. Ronald is survived by his wife, Beverly, sister, Roselyn (Carl) Johnson of Iron River, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved pet, Simba. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn, Russell, Jerry, Bennett, and Jack Holmes, and sisters, Marcella Larson, Dawn Halada, Joan Nardi, and Hazel Clemons. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Dawn Treado Green to officiate. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery in the spring. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Northwoods Animal Shelter.
