Ronald "Ron" W. Powell

Ronald “Ron” W. Powell, age 83, of Iron River, MI, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, MI. He was born March 6, 1934 in Antigo, WI, the son of the late Delbert and Kathleen (Tatro) Powell. He attended and graduated from the White Lake High School in Wisconsin, with the Class of 1952. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving from 1953 to 1956 in Korea. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. On February 7, 1959, Ron married Avie Benson at the South Range Lutheran Church. The couple celebrated 58 wonderful years together this year. He was employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 35 years. He attended Grace Covenant Church, and was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #324 and American Legion Reino Post #21. Ron enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling and motorcycling. After retirement, he and Avie traveled the United States for 13 years in their RV, delighting in the new experiences it brought them. Ron is survived by his wife, Avie; sons, Gary (Julie Jean) Powell of Iron River, MI and Roger (Becky) Powell of Eagle River, WI; grandchildren, Becky, Sarah, Zack, Cole, Carson and Caden; great grandchildren, Nova, Isla, Zackariah, Dominick, Ezra, Zane and Remy; brother, Tom Darinski of Shiocton, WI; as well as numerous in-laws and extended family. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Karen Darinski and many in-laws. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Grace Covenant Church in Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor James Swanson II to officiate. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the service. Memorial donations may be made to the Sons of the American Legion Reino Post #21, for benefit of the “Honor Flight” endeavor; or to the Grace Covenant Church of Iron River.
