Rose M. Johnson, age 89, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls, MI. She was born on March 14, 1931 in Caspian, MI; the daughter of the late Paul and Carmela (Folino) Mangone. Rose attended the Caspian and Stambaugh Schools, graduating from Stambaugh High School with the Class of 1949. She earned a certificate of completion in business and office procedures from Miss Brown’s Business College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Rose married William “Bill” J. Johnson on October 29, 1960 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. The couple made their home in Iron River and celebrated 37 wonderful years together before Bill’s passing on November 17, 1997. She was employed as a receptionist for Drs. John E. Newby and Ray Atansoff, Optometrists and later started her own home business providing secretarial services. For many years Rose worked at Angeli Foods demonstrating products and she was the Desk Supervisor at the Iron County Museum for over 16 years. Rose was very social, enjoying the company of family and friends as well as meeting new people. She was well-known for her community service, including the Iron County Museum Italian Day and Christmas Tree Galleria committees; Lady Elks, where she was a past vice president; the Twentieth Century Club; the Iron County Hospital Auxiliary; past Publicity Chairperson for the Community Concert Association; Y.M.C.A. board member; and the Central School Parent Teacher Organization. Most notably she was a member and past president of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP), Iron County Chapter and for many years was an active member of the Olde Corker’s Bottle Club, where she was president and vice president. A life-long collector of antiques and rare bottles, Rose also enjoyed dancing and bingo in her later years. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River and a former member of St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church of Iron River, where she served on the church council and sang in the choir. Rose was the beloved mother of Lisa (Jay) Krickeberg and Paul Johnson and proud grandmother to James, Jenna, and Jessica Krickeberg and Julia (Alex) Proite. She also is survived by a brother, David Mangone; sister, Genevieve (the late Frank) Czaplewski; sisters-in-law, Ann (the late Frank) Johnson, Marie (Don) Chiochetto, Phyllis Mangone; brother-in-law, Tom (the late Violet) Groppi; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Besides her parents and husband, Rose was preceded in death by her in-laws, Gunnard and Elma Johnson; brothers, Danny (the late Lorraine) Mangone and Michael Mangone; sisters, Antonette (the late Norman) Jacobson, Violet Groppi, Connie (the late Sam) Stella; and in-laws, Frank Johnson, Christine (the late Melvin) Samppala, Robert (the late Adeline) Johnson, Svea Nilsson, Jerry (the late Marilyn) Johnson, Frank Czaplewski, and Tom Yingling. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021 from 9:00am to 10:45am at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. Funeral services will follow at 11am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial. At the request of the family and the funeral home, masks are required and please respect social distancing. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery. Rose’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls for the loving care and friendship they provided to Rose.
