Roxanne Mary Goodney, age 85, of Stambaugh, Michigan, went to her heavenly home, unexpectedly, on January 23, 2023, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, due to complications caused by the Coronavirus. She was born on October 26, 1937, in Kingsford, Michigan, to parents Lester Vernon and Lorraine Alzena (Priniski) Goodney. She grew up in Wyandotte, Michigan, and graduated from Roosevelt High School, where she excelled in Tennis and Swimming. She then attended the Michigan State University in East Lansing and received her teaching degree. She married Virgil Lloyd Horton in 1959, and together they had six children. They settled in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, and raised their family there. Although life had different roads for them, they remained kind and caring to one another. She then married Darryl Dean Hawke in 1980, and they had one child together. They remained friends until his death in 1992. Her greatest accomplishment was that she raised “good people”. Besides teaching, she has owned and operated the Chicaugon Lake Cottages for decades. Her grandparents purchased the property over 100 years ago. She worked at Coleman Products, Ski Brule in the rental office for years and enjoyed being the “breakfast lady” at the AmericInn in Iron River. Most recently, she was part owner of The Laughing Loon Emporium in Iron River, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Roxanne was an amazing woman who was dedicated to her family. She was an avid antique collector and dealer. She loved going to auctions, estate sales and flea markets. She was a classic movie buff, full of facts and Turner Classic Movies was her favorite television channel. She enjoyed going to lunch with her friends. Holiday and birthday gatherings with family was especially important, as she loved spending time with her family. She loved our yearly vacation to Calumet and the Copper Country. Her favorite place in the world was being at “the cottages” our multi-generational resort on Chicaugon Lake, which she called “home”. Known as Rocky or Roxy to some, she was a kind, honest, compassionate, gracious, and wise woman. She was the most thoughtful person, always with a small heartfelt gift or trinket for her friends and family, for no other reason but to show her love for you. She enjoyed life and was grateful for the little moments. She loved loons, hummingbirds, and dragon flies. Quick to smile, many will miss her sunny disposition and her sense of humor. She lived a life of love. She was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic church in Caspian and a member of the St. Agnes Alter Society. “A mother holds her children’s hands for a while, their hearts forever.” She is survived by her seven children, Crystal (Kent) McClelland, Dawne (Steve-O) Felder, Mark (Patsy) Horton, Stephen (Dana) Horton, Starr (Vincent) Ferrara, Leland (Monica) Horton, and Darryl (Lyndsy) Hawke; 15 grandchildren, Dustin (Kylie) Remer, Serina (Matt) Neumann, Kyle Remer, Shannon and Courtney Felder, K.C., Haley and Hunter Horton, Erik and Nick Helgemo, Natalie Pigeon, Collin, Logan and Brennen Horton and Lilly Hawke; 15 great grandchildren, Carter, Juan, Adriana, Cristina, Raphael, Cristian, Danny, Sebastian, Lorena, Santiago, Xavier, Kiera, Mason, Kayden and Kinsley; her four legged feline, Fritz, her constant companion; and special friend, Barb Zorzin. She was preceded in death by her parents and son-in-law, Ronald Remer. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 30th, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River, Michigan, followed by the Mass of Christian burial at Noon at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Caspian, Michigan, with Father Jeffrey Kurtz to officiate. Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery in the spring. “Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven.”
