Sally J. Benter

Sally J. Benter, age 60, Tipler, WI died Saturday June 7, 2008 at the Iron River Care Center, Iron River, MI after a courageous battle with cancer Born: January 5, 1948 in Stambaugh, MI She was the daughter of William and Pearl (Maki) Thoney who both died when she was very young. Sally was raised by her Godparents (maternal aunt and uncle) Irene and Pete Johnson. She attended the Iron River schools, graduating from Iron River High School in 1966. After graduation, she attended Stout University. Sally married Robert Benter on August 24, 1968 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Beechwood and the couple made their home in Tipler. They celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in 2007. She served as Town Clerk and Treasurer of Tipler for 32 years. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Tipler, the Long Lake Fire Department Auxiliary Board and the Long Lake - Tipler Rescue Squad. Sally was an accomplished organist. She was the organist for St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Tipler and St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iron River and was called upon to play the organ on many occasions. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, needlework, camping, baking, watching her hummingbirds, and especially spending time with family and friends. She was also preceded in death by her brother Neil, her Godparents Irene and Pete Johnson, nephew David Thoney Jr., and sisters-in-law, Doris Thoney and Constance Benter. She is survived by her husband, Robert Two daughters; Sharon (Tim) Johnson of DePere, WI Lauri (David) LaCount of Green Bay, WI Brother, David Thoney of Iron River Sister-in-law, Bonnie (Richard) Harju of Iron River Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews Visitation: Monday June 9, 2008 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron River and Tuesday June 10, 2008 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church, Iron River. Funeral Service: Tuesday June 10, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iron River with Pastor David Neuman & dear friend Pastor Dale Baumler to officiate. Interment: Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River Pallbearers; Mark Donati, Danny Thoney, Ron Maki, Ben Lazzio, Jeff Lazzio & Rich Harju. The family would like to thank the Staff of the Iron River Care Center for their wonderful care of Sally and the entire family.
