Thomas Barnhart, age 94, of Iron River, MI, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at his home. He was born on December 17, 1925 in Shelby, OH, the son of the late Merle and Mertle (Molder) Barnhart. Thomas attended the Shelby schools and graduated. He was a US Marine Corps veteran, serving during World War II in the Pacific. Thomas married Verda Reeder on June 13, 1975 in Delaware County, Indiana. The couple moved to Iron River in 1979. They celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in 2009. Verda preceded him in death on August 1, 2009. He owned and operated B & Y Furnace of Iron River before his retirement. Thomas was a member of the VFW Post 4329 and the American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, both of Galion, OH. He was a founding member and the first Commander of the Amvets Post Polk Twp Post 1979 in Galion, OH. He enjoyed watching Westerns, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family. Thomas is survived by his daughters, Darla (Scott) Sprague of Iron River, MI and Jennie Lambert of Iron Mountain, MI; son, Jerry (Toby) Barnhart; sister, Ardelle (Floyd) Rietveld of Dayton, OH; sister-in-law, Ruth Reeder of Butler, OH; grandchildren, Michael Fifield, Jennifer Winkler, Thomas Metz, Irene Roski, Fred (Shannon) Lambert, Jeff (Nikki) Lambert, David Lambert, and Laura (Sean) Cooley; 20 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his great granddaughter, Alison Lambert; brothers, Henry, John, Merrill Jr., and his infant twin brother, Jerry Barnhart; sisters, Loella Weddell, Rhea Hartman, and Bonnie Ginter; brother-in-law, Herple Reeder; and sister-in-law, Hazel Reeder. Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River, MI. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
