Valentine Anthony Mower, Jr.

April 22, 1940 — January 15, 2026

In Loving Memory, we announce the passing of Valentine Anthony Mower Jr. who peacefully departed this life on January 15, 2026, at the age of 85 in the care of Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center with loved ones by his side. Born on April 22, 1940, in Iron River, MI, he was the beloved first son of Valentine and Ida (Vantaggi) Mower.

Val's journey was woven with love for family, nature, and community. A proud graduate of Iron River High School, Val was a committed student and an avid athlete, enjoying football and the art of trout fishing. One of his many early accomplishments include achieving the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout, a testament to his dedication and character.

A passion for the natural world led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Norbert College, followed by advanced studies in forestry at Michigan Tech University and the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Val's career in the timber industry was more than a profession; it was a calling. A self-proclaimed lumberjack, he dedicated decades to his craft, working mainly as a broker and sawmill manager. His leadership roles as Director of the National Hardwood Lumber Association and President of the Lake States Lumber Association reflect his influence and dedication to the industry.

During his time at Hamilton Industries in Two Rivers, WI, Val met the love of his life, Kathy Kellner. Their bond was sealed in marriage on October 22, 1988, in Manitowoc, WI. Together, they celebrated 37 beautiful years of marriage, marked by laughter, love, and shared dreams.

Val's adventurous spirit knew no bounds. He embarked on many memorable trips from the wilds of Alaska to the rugged terrains of British Columbia, Colorado, and beyond, always in pursuit of the perfect catch or the thrill of the hunt. Tales from Paradise hunting camp with his best friends Tom Bonk and Bob Bruckner are legendary and speak to the camaraderie and joy that filled his days.

In 1992, Val realized a lifelong ambition by co-founding Ottawa Forest Products in Ironwood, MI. His vision and leadership were instrumental in its success, culminating in the role of President as well as head of log procurement and sales. In 2012 he retired to embrace his golden years with the same zest.

Val leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; sons Anthony of Conway, SC, Mark (Kristin) of Centennial, CO, and David (Sarah) of Washburn, WI; sisters Cecilia (Donald) Adamson of Paris, ME, and Mary (Robert Bruckner) Mower of Iron River, MI. His grandchildren, Cierra Hintz-Mower, Addison, Sophia, and AJ Mower, and great-granddaughter Oaklee Hintz-Mower, will carry forward his spirit. Val's extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and dear friends.

His passing reunites him with his parents, brother Henry Mower and his wife Virginia, and in-laws Joseph and Mary Kellner.

To honor Val's life, visitation will be held on June 6, 2026, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River, MI. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, with Fr. Daniel Fosu officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Val will be laid to rest at Resthaven Cemetery.
